FRC Day 6: Marriage is a covenant, a sacred vow

Love should grow, be able to stand in difficult situations, and be selfless just like a tree.

The 27th Family Rosary Crusade entered its sixth day, with the theme "Inang Maria, Salamin ng Awa ng Diyos." The mass presider, Rev. Fr. John Patrick Gumasing, emphasized the importance of marriage in his homily.

Fr. Gumasing mentioned that marriage should not cease when two people become one, but it should deepen throughout time to establish a stable foundation. The Philippines, along with Vatican, are the only remaining states left with no divorce law - contradicts the fact of having a substantial percentage of couples destroying their homes. The homily served as an advice to both conflicting and healthy marriage - that when problems arise, families should solve it holding hands.

He also emphasized the great importance of harmony in marriage which all relates to a tree. As time passes, a tree's roots become deeper and stronger, able to resist even the most ferocious storms. It will grow from the most frail sapling to the most luscious tree yielding the finest fruits. However, if the tree is not watered on a frequent basis, it will wither and die; if properly cared for, it is up to the lumberjack's will whether to axe it's life or not.

The tree mirrors the life of a marriage. Marriage, according to Rev. Fr. Gumasing, only grows and prospers as time passes. It is the result of the efforts of a committed and unconditionally loving pair, keeping this relationship going till death comes knocking.

As young Dominicans, we are not yet of the age to receive the sacrament of matrimony. As a product of our parents' love for each other, we can be instruments to improve their relationship at a tough period in their marriage - creating a strong and stable basis for the family's well-being.
